Eric Dolpy was probably one of the most "out there" jazz musicians in the early 1960s. He extended the vocabulary and boundaries of the alto saxophone, flute, and bass clarinet. I can't express how much I love his music and how my compositions were deeply influenced by him (especially when I was in college at USC studying music composition).. The way he used wide intervals and bebop dissonant harmonies, blew me away. Miles Davis, however, wasn't a huge fan of his playing and said it sounded like someone was stepping on his foot every time he soloed. It kinda does but I love it!
